The Addis Ababa Food and Drug Authority, in collaboration with the Ministry of Health, held a discussion with various leaders, stakeholders and branch office managers on the implementation of the Code of Conduct on the Ethics Committee of Health Professionals.

At the forum, the Deputy General Manager of the Regulatory Sector of the Addis Ababa Food and Drug Authority, Ato Enga Ereketa, welcomed the invited guests and pointed out that the Authority is working hard to achieve justice in the area of ​​medical errors, and stated that this is a platform that aims to provide a common understanding and direction for all of us on the problems faced by medical errors.

In her opening speech, Ms. Sofia Alemu, the Standing Committee on Women and Children’s Social Sector of the Addis Ababa Assembly, said that institutions need to work in accordance with the guidelines and develop ethically qualified professionals, and that there is a need for coordinated monitoring in the case of medical errors.

Ato Dawit Fenta, a lawyer from the Addis Ababa Justice Bureau, provided a detailed discussion on the implementation of the Fetain Discipline Law, legal frameworks, objectives, general procedures and processes.

Ato Metkel Gebermed, Director of the Authority’s Medical Error and Health Professionals Ethics Monitoring Directorate, explained the functions and responsibilities of the Health Professionals Ethics Committee, the work done by health professionals in the fiscal year, the problems encountered and the results achieved.

Dr. Bereket, the chairperson of the Health Professionals Ethics Committee, gave a detailed explanation of the activities carried out by the committee, the issues that need to be clarified, and the findings.

The participants of the discussion also discussed the need to strengthen and support the committee, the need to work to reduce cases that occur knowingly or unknowingly, the need to provide awareness training to professionals on medical malpractice, and the need for clear communication in explaining the medical process to patients.

Finally, the leaders of the Authority stated in the conclusion of the forum that the Authority has been focusing on the issue of medical malpractice and is improving its service delivery by recording encouraging changes from time to time. It is appropriate to carry out awareness-raising work so that professionals are aware of the harm they cause, whether knowingly or unknowingly. It is necessary to work together by preparing a strong legal framework through guidelines and regulations. They emphasized that professionals should be trained in the law to be aware of the law and to reduce the problems.
