The Addis Ababa Food and Medicine Authority has issued a press statement announcing that, following an amendment to Proclamation No. 94/2019 (which defines the powers and duties of the executive bodies of the Addis Ababa City Administration), certain services previously rendered by the Authority have been transferred to the Health Bureau.

During the briefing, Ms. Tigist Bedada, General Manager of the Authority, explained that the following functions—previously handled by the Addis Ababa Food and Medicine Authority—have been moved to the Health Bureau: the issuance and renewal of competency certificates for health institutions; the issuance and renewal of competency certifications for health professionals; and matters concerning medical malpractice and the professional ethics of health practitioners (medico-legal affairs). Ms. Tigist further noted that the core services provided by the Addis Ababa Food and Medicine Authority include the certification and regulation of food and health-related establishments, the certification and regulation of pharmaceutical establishments, the oversight of health facilities and professionals, post-market surveillance, and laboratory and product testing. She explained that the Authority facilitates the certification of food and health-related establishments through an online platform known as the "AAFDA portal."

Additionally, the General Manager clarified that, effective October 18, 2019, the Addis Ababa Food and Medicine Authority no longer provides services related to the renewal of health facility certifications, the renewal of health professional certifications, or matters concerning medical malpractice and the professional ethics of health practitioners (medico-legal services). Dr. Yohannes Chala, Head of the Addis Ababa Health Bureau, stated that, in accordance with the Executive Organs Proclamation No. 94/2019 regarding the reorganization of institutions, services previously provided by the Addis Ababa Food and Medicine Authority have been transferred to the Addis Ababa Health Bureau. He further noted that, effective October 29, 2019 (Tikimt 18, 2019 E.C.), applicants can access these services online by entering the required information into the system available at License.aahb.gov.et.
