The Addis Ababa Food and Medicine Authority is conducting integrated support and monitoring activities to encourage food and health-related service providers—including food manufacturers, retail outlets, and supermarkets—to adopt self-regulation. This initiative aims to ensure these establishments meet national standards and provide high-quality products and services to the public.
Mr. Enga Erketta, Deputy General Manager of the Authority’s Regulatory Sector, stated that extensive preparatory work is underway to foster a sense of ownership regarding self-regulation among food service establishments. He noted that these efforts are designed to help them deliver quality services, become better prepared, and remain competitive, while also building trust between the Authority and the establishments. Ato Estifanos Getachew, from the Directorate for the Regulation of Food and Health-Related Establishments, stated that various initiatives are underway to ensure that food service providers, manufacturers, food retail outlets, and supermarkets meet the country’s minimum standards. The goal is for these establishments to take responsibility for delivering safe and healthy products and services to the consuming public.
Within this framework, efforts are being made to enable these establishments to independently identify their own shortcomings, develop appropriate action plans to address these issues, and engage in self-regulation.
To sustain and strengthen this initiative, the Authority is conducting the necessary monitoring and oversight activities to help these establishments adapt to this operational approach.
