The authority announced that it has taken administrative action due to the findings of the inspection of 309 health institutions and drug retail establishments in the completed fiscal year.

In the inspection work carried out by the Addis Ababa Food and Drug Authority in the Health Institutions and Professionals Inspection Sector, 3,499 health institutions and drug retail establishments were inspected, of which 1,748 were private and government health institutions, 1,648 were drug retailers, and 103 were traditional medicine institutions. According to the information provided by the Director of the Sector, Ato Gelgelo Oljira, 17,317 health professionals working and providing services in these institutions were inspected.

The Director stated that administrative action was taken against 309 health institutions and pharmaceutical retail establishments due to problems found during the inspection carried out during the fiscal year, and that 227 of these institutions were given written warnings to correct their problems.

76 health institutions, pharmaceutical retail establishments, and traditional medicine establishments were temporarily closed to correct their problems, and 6 institutions had their certification revoked due to their operation outside the scope of their authorized and granted certification. It was also stated that among those whose certification was revoked were 3 health institutions, 1 pharmaceutical retail establishment, and 2 traditional medicine establishments.

Information from the sector shows that the authority has been able to dispose of expired and damaged pharmaceutical products that pose a threat to public health, with an estimated value of 74,977,016.54 birr, as part of its efforts to ensure that the community receives quality and safe health services during the fiscal year.
