The authority’s control plan should be risk-based.

The Addis Ababa Food and Drug Authority Food and Health Institutions Control Directorate held a joint discussion with the branch directors on the main activities to be carried out from the center to the branches in the 2018 fiscal year.

August /21/2017 A.D.

The directorate has planned to implement control activities in three main areas in order to ensure that the public can access quality and safe food and health services in the 2018 fiscal year.

The activities that the directorate will focus on from the center to the branches are risk-based control on institutions identified as a risk to public health, self-regulation on institutions identified as competent, and regular control activities.

The regular inspection work planned for the fiscal year is for institutions that will be inspected once during the fiscal year, and these institutions will be inspected repeatedly only when they encounter serious issues, said the director of the sector, Ato Astipanos Getachew. The director added that the second is for institutions that will conduct planned rally regulation, and these institutions have been identified by the authority and have previously performed well and are receiving support, and they will report on their own control. The third is for risk-based inspection work, which is for institutions that will be inspected two or more times during the fiscal year, and the services they provide and the products they sell are identified as being of concern and dangerous to public health and will be inspected with special attention.

The plan presented for discussion indicates that the control work will be applied to these and other institutions whose services and products are considered to be of concern to health.

The Directorate has set out special tasks for control work in the 2018 budget year, including ensuring that the organization of meat selling institutions is organized, ensuring that the organization and operation of school catering institutions are streamlined and compliant with standards, ensuring that bakery institutions are organized, and also ensuring that tobacco and food and health products are free from illegal practices through the implementation of block organization and stakeholder participation.

The Deputy General Manager of the Regulatory Sector, Ato Enga Ereketa, who attended the discussion and gave his opinion, said that it is appropriate to plan a quality plan by properly analyzing the plan from the center to the branches according to the characteristics of each branch. He said that we must fulfill our responsibility to protect the health of the community by preparing and providing capacity building training to adequately carry out the work and implement the plan, preparing necessary training for the bodies and stakeholders who are helpful to our work, and working together.
