The Addis Ababa Food and Drug Authority carried out extensive control and monitoring activities on food and health-related institutions in the 9 months of the 2018 budget year.

Based on the powers and responsibilities granted by the Executive Bodies Establishment Proclamation No. 84/2016, the authority conducted regular inspections on 2,300 food manufacturing institutions, 393 food distribution institutions, 8,134 food sales institutions, 8,429 food service institutions, and 4,105 health-related service institutions at the center and 11 branches, and risk-based inspections were conducted on 2,358 institutions. Tobacco inspections were also conducted on 25,485 institutions.

During the inspection process, 1,049 establishments with deficiencies were given written warnings, 124 establishments were temporarily closed, 54 establishments were fined, 4 establishments had their licenses revoked, and 4 individuals were prosecuted. In total, appropriate action was taken against 1,230 establishments based on the findings.

In addition, in the past 9 months, it was possible to remove spoiled, expired and sun-exposed food, beverages, spoiled health products, eating and cooking utensils, and tobacco products worth 5,967,519 birr.
These activities have been able to protect the community from health hazards that may occur if they spread in the community, especially from communicable and non-communicable diseases.
In addition to the regular inspection activities carried out by the authority to protect the health of the community, in order to prevent illegal activities based on the Easter holiday, the authority is coordinating from the center to the branches to conduct product-specific inspections at bazaars, weekend markets, butcher shops, minimarkets and supermarkets, and in this regard, a campaign is being carried out to control butcher shops from selling meat in non-food grade packaging, the authority said.
