The Authority renewed the competency certificates of 3,362 food and health-related establishments within two months.

The Addis Ababa City Administration Food and Medicine Authority has planned to renew the competency certificates of 21,064 food and health-related establishments—ranging from central to cluster levels—during the 2019/2020 (2012 E.C.) fiscal year. Out of the 5,589 establishments targeted for renewal during the months of Hamle and Nahase (July and August), the Authority successfully renewed 3,362, achieving a 60 percent performance rate.

The renewal process runs from Hamle 1 to Tahsas 30 (July 8 to January 8). To ensure the overall annual plan is met within the set timeframe, the Authority conducted preliminary gap assessments on the establishments and provided feedback, thereby preparing them to address any deficiencies prior to the renewal.

Ms. Bezayit Girma, Director of Food and Health-Related Establishments Competency Certification, stated that the renewal process is conducted online; establishments can submit their renewal applications via the dedicated portal (license.aafda.gov.et) without needing to visit the Authority in person. She further noted that institutions encountering difficulties during the process could visit in person to receive technical support.

Additionally, she urged institutions to integrate with the new online system—which has replaced the previous manual procedure—and to renew their certificates of competence on time.

Finally, Ms. Beza emphasized that the Authority would take action, in accordance with its legal mandate and responsibilities, against any institutions found operating with expired certificates of competence.
